Qualified, trained and experienced TAs are only as effective as their deployment and management allows. Teachers retain responsibility for the teaching and learning of the pupils in their classes They must: understand the purpose of additional adults in the classroom, TAs or HLTAs know and understand the skills and background of each TA working in their class create working partnerships and explicit systems create planning and feedback opportunities with the TAs ensure the TA understands the learning objective of each lesson with which they are involved knows the particular needs and strengths of the pupils with which they are to work has access to all necessary resources and equipment Ensure that HLTAs who take their class in their absence are fully planned and prepared, and feedback appropriately are competent to advance the learning of the pupils
